Islington residents gets the hump with the bump
Posted on Thursday, October 30 @ 11:47:43 GMT by pulpsimon

Drivers in Islington, north London, have complained that their cars are being damaged because the speed bumps are too high.

A council spokesman acknowledged there were a few which which are "probably too high" and it would put them right.

The issue will be broadcast on BBC London's Inside Out (I-Player link) on Wednesday at 1930 BST.

One local resident said: "I tend to drive a Freelander and I drive it deliberately because I live in Islington and I got fed driving over speed bumps and having my back broken as a consequence. "Copenhagen Road for example is a classic example where you've got a speed bump, then there's a zebra crossing which has got a speed bump on it, then there's another speed bump and they're literally about 25 yards from each other." He added: "I reckon I can probably get a smoother ride driving along a rode in Peru through the Peruvian jungle than I can along the tarmac of Islington."

Local MP Emily Thornberry said the council must put the problem right. "The council have made a mistake," she said. "These speed bumps are illegal, we need to know how many illegal speed bumps they've got, where they are and what they're going to do about it."

There are more than 1,900 speed humps within the borough, many of which were designed in consultation with local residents, the council said.

However, Councillor Greg Foxsmith said: "We think there are a few which are probably too high. ""These were constructed within the regulations but we think in some cases the road surface may have sunk or even the impact of cars coming down on the other side of the road bumps has left some of them too high." He added: "Certainly in Roman Road we've made that acknowledgement and if there are speed bumps which are too high of course we'll put them right."
